Volunteering to change the world

Volunteer From Home: Make Valentines Cards for Lonely Seniors in Care Centers, Students Earn Community Service Hours

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner!  Would you like to help brighten Valentine’s Day for senior citizens living in nursing care facilities all over America?  If so, then we have the perfect volunteer from home project for you, and everyone of all ages can help.  Make a difference from home and volunteer to make Valentines cards for seniors.

SUPPLIES:

Make your Valentines cards using any supplies you have on hand such as construction paper, glue, crayons, stickers, etc.  (No glitter please!)

HOW TO:

Simple or elaborate?  It’s up to you.  Your Valentine can be shaped like a heart, a folded card with or without and envelope or even something more creative.

Add a message to your Valentine.  Phrases like, “May your Valentine’s Day be filled with love and laughter!”  or “Wishing you the sweetest, happiest Valentine’s Day ever!” work well.

WHERE TO DELIVER:

Deliver your cards locally: Feel free to drop your handmade cards off at a local nursing care center in your area.  You may want to call ahead to let them know you have Valentines, and typically the director of activities will be able to answer any questions you may have.

Mail your cards:  If you don’t want to deliver your cards locally, send your cards to Small Acts Big Change, a nonprofit 501(c)3 charity.  The volunteers at SABC will deliver your cards to residents at nursing care facilities all over America to help make Valentine’s Day wonderful for everyone. SABC will accept cards all year long, but if you want your cards to be delivered for this upcoming Valentine’s day,  please make sure they are received by SABC by February 10th.

Your cards can be mailed to:  Valentines for Seniors, Small Acts Big Change, PO Box 1374, La Canada, CA 91012.

EARN COMMUNITY SERVICE VOLUNTEER HOURS:

Students and individuals from all over the world can earn service hours for their time spent making cards for Small Acts Big Change. We do not have a formula in which a particular number of cards equals service hours.  Everyone has their own timeframe and art skills, so the time spent on each card varies by card and individual.

For this project, we ask volunteers to track their actual time spent making the cards.  How do you do this?  Take photos of your progress for submission all throughout your process and keep a log documenting your volunteer time.   If we have concerns about the photos and documentation submitted, we may ask a service coordinator or parent to verify the service hours submitted.

In order to receive credit for your work, please send your cards to Small Acts Big Change at PO Box 1374, La Canada, CA 91012.  Please include your contact information in the package with the cards.  Paperwork and pictures can be submitted electronically to our email address, [email protected].

Please contact Carolyn at [email protected] with any questions you may have.
