Volunteer From Home: DIY Craft No-Sew Fleece Blankets, Students Earn Service Hours

Would you like to help a senior citizen by making a difference from home?  This no-sew blanket  is easy to make, inexpensive and will be well-received by senior citizens everywhere!  What a wonderful gift for a senior… a snuggly blanket to help keep them warm when they are relaxing.  The project takes about 30 minutes to complete, and children 8 years and older can easily help.

SUPPLIES: The supplies list is short for this project:

  • Two (2) pieces of 2 yards of coordinating anti-pill fleece fabric, so 4 yards of fleece fabric in total
  • One pair of quality fabric scissors
  • One ruler or tape measure

HOW TO:

Step 1:  Align the fabric

Lay the two pieces of fleece on top of each other so that the edges  line up.  The sides of the fabric you want to show should be facing outward.

Step 2 : Cut off the salvage edges

Cut off the salvage edge from each piece of fleece.  The cut  doesn’t have to be perfectly straight.  We used the salvage edge as our guide and the cut turned out straight enough.  Note:  You may want to save the salvage scraps for another project.

Step 3:  Measure and cut the blanket corners

With the fabric pieces aligned, cut a 4 inch square from each corner of the fleece and discard.  Note:  You may want to save the corner scraps for another project.

Step 4:  Cut the blanket fringe

With the fabric pieces aligned, measure and cut 4 inch strips into the fabric with each cut 1 inch apart.  When you are finished,  you will have multiple fringe pieces measuring 4 inches long by 1 inch wide.

Step 5:  Tie the blanket fringe

The next step is to attach the top fleece to the bottom fleece.  Tie the fringe strips together all the way around the blanket by knotting the strips from the front and back pieces of fleece.  Each knot should be tied tightly but be careful not to bunch the fabric.

Step 6:  Voila!

Your blanket  is complete!  To add an extra touch?  Roll your blanket and tie it with a pretty ribbon.
