Volunteer From Home: 25 More Days of COVID Random Acts of Kindness

 

 

It’s unbelievable but true, almost the entire world is sheltering in place and practicing social distancing as we ride out the storm of the COVID19 pandemic.  It’s also true that this pandemic has not always brought out the best in some people.  That said, there are many, many more people rising up to love and support each other during our time of need.  Those helpers are the people who will read this blog post.

We’ve all read the news stories of communities helping neighbors, teens shopping for necessities for at-risk senior citizens, and people in waves fostering and adopting homeless pets from their local shelters.  Goodness abounds everywhere you look.  It warms the heart and restores faith in humanity.

Difficult times often bring out the best in people. Although we are sheltering in place, there are plenty of things we can do from home to help others.   Kindness is powerful, kindness is healing.

MORE RANDOM ACTS OF COVID KINDNESS, DAYS 26 through 50:

Day 26:  Share a joke, pass along a laugh

Please share your favorite joke with us in the comments below.  Here are a few of our favorites:

Q: Where do cows go for entertainment?
A: The mooooo-vies!

Q: How does the ocean say hello?
A: It waves.

Q: Why was the math book sad?
A: Because it had so many problems.

Person 1: Knock-knock.
Person 2: Who’s there?
Person 1: Wooden shoe.
Person 2: Wooden shoe who?
Person 1: Wooden shoe like to hear another joke?

 

Day 27:  Donate blood

Unfortunately, public blood drives all over the world have been canceled due to the rule at the time this article was written that  public gatherings should be limited to 10 or less people.  However, the need for donated blood during the COVID19 pandemic is great.   Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the America Red Cross, said in a statement that one of the most important things people can do right now to help others is to give blood.  If you are healthy and able to help, please contact your local hospital or America Red Cross office for details about donating. 

 

Day 28: Support local business

Supporting local businesses means you care and are supporting your local community.  The money you spend locally puts money back into your community.

 

Day 29: Pick up 10 pieces of litter each day

It adds up!

 

Day 30: Buy supplies online and ship them to your local animal shelter

Animal shelters desperately need supplies.  Please help pets waiting for their forever homes by sending towels, blankets, beds and toys to help make their wait a little more comfortable.

 

Day 31:  Wash your hands to help keep everyone safe

How to:  Wet your hands with warm running water.  Lather your hands well by rubbing them together for 25 seconds with plenty of soap. Make sure to lather in between your fingers and both the top/bottom of your hands.  Rinse well. 

 

Day 32:  Only buy what you need so everyone n your community can get supplies

Supplies seem to be somewhat limited now in the stores.  Buying only what you need ensures others will have a chance to get the supplies they need too. 

 

 Day 33:   Share your surplus

Share, share, share what you can with others who have a need.

 

 

Day 34:   Check in on someone who lives alone

Isolation is tough.  Your call or safe visit can make a big difference to someone who lives alone. 

 

Day 35: Share a good book 

Love that book you just read? Make someone’s day and share it! 

 

Day 36: Share a puzzle with a friend

Love that puzzle you just completed?  Take it apart and share it with a friend or relative so they can enjoy it too.

 

Day 37:   Do something nice for yourself today

Here are a few ideas:

  • Curl up with a blanket and read a good book
  • Take a walk outside
  • Meditate
  • Take a relaxing bath
  • Color
  • Bird watch 
  • Call a friend
  • Call your mother
  • Stretch slowly for 15 minutes
  • Watch your favorite movie
  • Snuggle with your pup
  • Give yourself a facial

 

Day 38:  Make and donate medical masks

 

Day 39:    Do something nice for a healthcare worker

Here are a few ideas from us:

  • Send a thank you card
  • Make a sign of thanks to hang outside the ER
  • Send lunch from a local restaurant to a nurse at a local hospital
  • Make a donate masks

 

Day 40: Be extra-kind to people working on grocery stores

Grocery store workers are everyday heroes, working in public so that you can get the food and supplies that you need.  We all need them and we all depend on them.  Please be sure to show them your gratitude by thanking them profusely and sincerely.

 

Day 41:  Shop local stores online

Are your local storefronts closed due to COVID19? You can still support local businesses by ordering from them online. 

 

 Day 42:  If you have a regular babysitter, release them from work but still pay them if you can

Your babysitter will thank you! 

 

Day 43: Say thank you often to frontline workers 

Every chance you get… 

     

 

Day 44:  Have dinner delivered from a local restaurant

Most restaurants are struggling right now for business.  Ordering take-out for your family helps them stay in business during these tough times. 

 

Day 45: Email residents at a nursing home

Contact the director of activities at your local nursing home for more information.  

 

Day 46: Always respect social distancing rules

Social distancing, also called physical distancing. means keeping at least 6 feet away from other people. 

 

Day 47:      Start a community garden and set up a staggered work schedule to honor social distancing guidelines

Supplies are scarce these days, so coordinate efforts with your neighbors to safely grow vegetables to help everyone have access to fresh food.

 

Day 48:   It’s safer at home for you and others
Stay home if you can.  Safer at home. 

 

Day 49:  Use your voice to advocate for individuals and organizations that need your help

Contact your local, state and national government officials about causes you care about.  Use your voice to create change.

 

Day 50:  Join together to help each other

In the end, we only have each other.  Be the helper. <3
